Friday Night Lights: Season 3

The third season has 13 episodes. It first aired on The 101 Network (DirecTV) from October 1, 2008, to January 14, 2009, and then ran on NBC from January 16 to April 10, 2009. A DVD set was released in Region 1 on May 19, 2009. The show was renewed for two more 13-episode seasons, keeping the same format as season 3. The focus remains on the Dillon Panthers and the pressures around football and life off the field.

Eight of the ten major cast members appear in the opening credits this season: Kyle Chandler as coach Eric Taylor; Connie Britton as Tami Taylor, now principal of Dillon High; Zach Gilford as quarterback Matt Saracen; Minka Kelly as Lyla Garrity; Taylor Kitsch as Tim Riggins; Adrianne Palicki as Tyra Collette; Jesse Plemons as Landry Clarke; and Aimee Teegarden as Julie Taylor. Supporting players include Buddy Garrity, Billy Riggins, Lorraine Saracen, Corrina Williams, Angela Collette, Mindy Collette, and Herc. New characters are the McCoy family (Joe and Katie McCoy and their son JD) and Shelby Garrett, Matt Saracen’s estranged mother.

The season opens with coach pressure after a failed bid for another state title. JD McCoy, a brilliant freshman quarterback from a wealthy but demanding family, arrives to challenge Matt Saracen for the starting job. Matt shifts to wide receiver but later returns to quarterback in the playoffs. Matt and Julie rekindle their romance. Smash Williams, who was injured the prior season, rediscovers his love for the game and earns a college tryout.

Other storylines include Tyra dating a cowboy named Cash, which strains her relationship with Landry; Tim Riggins and Lyla Garrity start dating; Billy Riggins becomes engaged to Tyra’s sister Mindy; and a plan to flip Buddy Garrity’s house for a profit with Jason Street involved. Jason eventually moves to New York City to be near his girlfriend and their baby.

Tami Taylor becomes the Dillon High School principal and clashes with Buddy Garrity over funding, including money for a Jumbotron. A plot to replace Taylor as head coach unfolds when Joe McCoy pushes for Wade Aikmen to take over, while Taylor is offered the job of coaching the East Dillon Lions, which is reopening after being closed.

The 2007–2008 Writers Guild strike created a longer gap between seasons 2 and 3, so some plotlines are summarized or left unresolved. Some characters from season 2, like Santiago and Lyla’s relationship with Chris, are not carried forward in detail. By season’s end, several cast members have left the show as part of the ongoing changes.

Critical reception was very positive. Rotten Tomatoes gave season 3 a 100% approval rating (average 8.6/10 from 18 reviews), with praise for its realistic storytelling and strong young cast. Metacritic scored it 83 out of 100, indicating universal acclaim.
