Freshfield Lane
Freshfield Lane is a 17-hectare geological Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) located east of Haywards Heath in West Sussex, England. It is also a Geological Conservation Review site.
The site is a working quarry that exposes rocks from the Wealden Group dating to the Lower Cretaceous period, about 140 to 113 million years old. Natural England describes Freshfield Lane as internationally important for palaeoenvironmental, rock provenance, and palaeogeographical studies.
There are footpaths around the boundaries of the two areas within the site, allowing people to walk around and view the geology from outside the quarry.
Location and size: Grid reference TQ 384 265; coordinates 51.021°N, 0.028°W. The area is 17.0 hectares (42 acres). It was designated as an SSSI in 1999.
