General (Finland)

General (Finnish: Kenraali) is the highest military rank in Finland. In peacetime it is held only by the Chief of Defence. The rank is equivalent to NATO OF-9. Historically, generals could be tied to a branch of service: there have been many jalkaväenkenraali (general of infantry), a few jääkärikenraali (Jäger general), two ratsuväenkenraali (general of cavalry) and one tykistönkenraali (general of artillery). Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim was a cavalry general before his promotion to field marshal.
