Fremont Solstice Parade
The Fremont Solstice Parade is an annual parade held every June in Seattle, Washington. It began in 1989, started by Barbara Luecke and Peter Toms, who were inspired by the Santa Barbara Summer Solstice Parade and Celebration.
The parade is known for unusual rules:
- No printed words, signage, or recognizable logos on floats
- No live animals (except guide animals)
- No motorized vehicles (except motorized wheelchairs)
- No functional weapons
It is organized by the Fremont Arts Council and is a showcase of DIY art and creativity. Participants build colorful, imaginative floats and wear creative costumes.
Notable sights in past parades have included the Solstice Cyclists, stilts with oversized props like giant beach balls, and other playful floats being hauled along the route.
The parade was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2022 parade was planned for Saturday, June 18.
