Yu Xiaoguang (于晓光), also known as Ethan Yu, was born on May 16, 1981, in Dandong, Liaoning, China. He started as a swimmer and later became a sprint canoer, winning national championships in swimming (1995 and 1996) and canoeing (1997). After leaving sports, he studied acting at the Central Academy of Drama and later studied music in Singapore under Lee Wei Song, becoming a composer as well as an actor.

He began acting in 2006 with the TV series My Kung Fu Girlfriend and has since appeared in many productions, including Fighting in Peking (2009), Mao Anying (2010), The Happy Time of the Spicy and Hot Girlfriend (2012), Beginning of the Great Revival (2011), and Deng Xiaoping at History's Crossroads (2014). He married Korean actress Choo Ja-hyun in 2017; they met while filming The Happy Time of the Spicy and Hot Girlfriend in 2012. Their son was born on June 1, 2018, in Seoul. Yu continues to work as an actor and composer.
