Franklin Township, Bergen County, New Jersey
Franklin Township was a municipality in Bergen County, New Jersey, from 1771 to 1926. It began on June 1, 1771, when Saddle River Township was divided and the new township was named for William Franklin, the colonial governor and son of Benjamin Franklin. By 1755 about 100 families lived there.
Over the years the township shrank as new towns formed from its lands: Pompton Township in 1796 (later part of Passaic County when it was created in 1837); Hohokus Township in 1849; Ridgewood Township in 1876; Midland Park in 1894; Oakland in 1902; and Franklin Lakes in 1922. After these secessions, the remaining area was Wyckoff. On November 2, 1926, residents voted to rename Franklin Township as Wyckoff Township, with 243 yes votes out of 337 total.
