Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel is a historic funeral home on Madison Avenue at 81st Street in Manhattan. It was founded in 1898 as Frank E. Campbell Burial and Cremation Company and is now owned by Service Corporation International. The chapel is famous for serving many celebrities and hosting high-profile memorials.
History
Frank E. Campbell was born on July 4, 1872, in Camp Point, Illinois. He moved to New York around 1892, and after marrying Amelia Klutz in 1898, he opened a funeral business near 23rd Street and Eighth Avenue. Campbell helped popularize the funeral chapel as a place for services, increased advertising for funerals, and used motor hearses instead of horse-drawn carriages. He died on January 19, 1934, of heart disease.
