Frœningen is a small commune in the Grand Est region of northeastern France, in the Haut-Rhin department. It covers about 14.44 square kilometers and had 881 residents in 2023. The town lies at an elevation of 252 to 305 meters above sea level. The mayor from 2020 to 2026 is Georges Heim.
Frœningen has a long history centered on its castle. In 1312, Ulrich de Ferrette gave Frœningen to Knight Conrad of Flaxlanden; later it passed to Hadmansdorf in 1458 and to the Reinach-Heidwiller family in 1539. The castle was rebuilt after fires in the 18th century and again in the early 19th century. It was damaged during World War I in 1917.
In the late 19th century the village had a large Jewish community and was nicknamed Little Switzerland. Frœningen is part of the Altkirch arrondissement and canton in the Haut-Rhin department.
