Adopt-a-Pet.com
Adopt-a-Pet.com is a web service that helps people find and adopt pets. It pulls information from more than 15,000 shelters in the United States and Canada and offers a searchable database. The site promotes pet adoption and spaying/neutering and uses traditional and social media, public service announcements, and partnerships with local governments to spread the message. Since 2015, it has also offered pet care manuals.
Brief history:
- Founded in 2000 as 1-800-Save-a-Pet.com by David Meyer, Steve Abbey, Luke Montgomery, Amy Luwis, and Doug McKee to reduce shelter overpopulation in Los Angeles; it also assisted Hurricane Katrina rescue efforts in 2005.
- Renamed Adopt a Pet in September 2008.
- In October 2008, partnered with Care2 to run the America’s Favorite Animal Shelter contest, awarding $20,000 to winners (awarded again in 2009).
- In January 2009, launched a national ADOPT campaign with a Shepard Fairey poster about Obama’s search for a dog.
- In April 2009, expanded to include rabbits, birds, and other animals, as well as farm animals, horses, reptiles, and fish.
- In May 2009, started the “Social Petworking” campaign to attach pet photos to emails or Facebook pages.
- In 2010, paid tribute to Rue McClanahan; in 2011, teamed with White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle for a pet adoption billboard campaign.
- In 2021, Adopt-a-Pet was acquired by Kinship, a subsidiary of Mars, Inc.
