Force11 Scholarly Communication Institute
Force11 Scholarly Communication Institute (FSCI) is a week-long program started in 2017 that teaches and connects people who work on how research is shared. Run by FORCE11, it brings researchers, students, administrators, funders, librarians, publishers, and other information professionals together to gain skills and work on projects. The goal is to help students, faculty, administrators, and librarians navigate the changing world of scholarly communication. As former FORCE11 president Cameron Neylon said, everyone has something to learn from others. FSCI is modeled after the Digital Humanities Summer Institute in Victoria, BC. It began in 2017 with support from FORCE11 and UC San Diego, and UCLA joined in 2019 to host the third annual event. Attendees pick one morning course and two afternoon courses on topics related to scholarly communication, with plenary sessions, do-a-thons, slide karaoke, and social events throughout the week. Participants have reported a deeper understanding of scholarly communication issues, and the program provides scholarships for attendees from six continents. A participant from Elizade University in Nigeria said the training helped him become a pioneer for scholarly communication in his country.
