Footwork FA14
The Footwork FA14 was Footwork’s Formula One car used during part of the 1993 season. It followed the FA13B and was driven by veteran Derek Warwick, who was returning from a two-year break, and Aguri Suzuki, who had stayed on from 1992.
Racing year
The FA14 debuted at the European Grand Prix at Donington Park, where neither driver finished. The season’s results were uneven: Suzuki had seven straight retirements late in the year, while Warwick often finished outside the top ten. Over time the car improved. Warwick scored points with a sixth-place finish at Silverstone and a fourth at the Hungaroring. Suzuki’s form also got better; he qualified sixth at Spa and was running fifth before his gearbox failed, and he finished seventh at Adelaide. The two collided at Monza early in the race.
Technology and features
From the British Grand Prix onward, the FA14 used an active suspension system borrowed from McLaren’s 1993 tech, licensed from TAG Electronics. Other key details:
- Chassis: carbon fibre monocoque
- Engine: Mugen Honda MF-351HB, 3.5 L V10, naturally aspirated, mid-mounted
- Power: about 720 hp at 13,200 rpm
- Transmission: 6-speed semi-automatic (Footwork / Xtrac)
- Weight: around 510 kg
- Tires: Goodyear
Season end and after
1993 was the final full season for both Warwick and Suzuki in F1. Warwick retired from the sport after the season. Suzuki later drove for Jordan and Ligier in subsequent seasons. For 1994 the team switched to Christian Fittipaldi and Gianni Morbidelli.
