First-level NUTS of the European Union
First-level NUTS are part of the Classification of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS), a geocode system created by the European Union to reference the main areas used for statistics. There are three NUTS levels (NUTS 1, NUTS 2, NUTS 3) and two levels of local administrative units (LAU 1 and LAU 2). Not all countries use every level, depending on their size. Luxembourg is the most extreme example: it has only LAUs, so each NUTS level covers the whole country.
In the EU, there are 92 first-level NUTS regions and 240 second-level NUTS regions.
First-level NUTS regions are found in countries such as Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Germany, Denmark, Estonia, Spain, Finland, France, Greece, Croatia, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Latvia, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Sweden, Slovenia, and Slovakia. There are also first-level NUTS regions for former EU member states, for EFTA members, and for candidate countries.
