Europump: the European Pump Manufacturers Association

Europump is the European trade association for pump manufacturers. It was founded in 1960 and is a non‑profit organization. It represents 18 national associations in 15 EU member states, plus Turkey, Russia and Switzerland. Its members include more than 450 companies, with production above €10 billion and about 100,000 jobs in Europe.

The association is based in Brussels and covers pumps used in water supply, circulators, wastewater, and pumps for chemical industries and agriculture. Its goal is to support the European pump industry and improve performance, efficiency, and competitiveness.

Europump’s main organs are the General Assembly and the Council (Board). The President is Dr. Soenke Brodersen, and the Secretary General is Guy van Doorslaer. The organization works with other industry groups and holds an annual meeting in spring; the 2012 edition was in Stresa, Italy, organized by ASSOPOMPE.

A key focus is ecodesign regulations for pumps. Europump uses a three‑part approach: Product Approach, Extended Product Approach, and Systems Approach. A major topic is the efficiency of pumps and upcoming ecodesign requirements (lots 28–31) under Regulation No. 547/2012, which implements energy rules for water pumps.

The water pump regulation sets minimum efficiency requirements (MEI). From 1 January 2013, MEI must be at least 0.1, and from 1 January 2015, MEI must be at least 0.4. Information requirements for rotodynamic water pumps also apply from 2013. Europump has issued guidelines to help manufacturers and others understand these rules.
