Eugène Joors
Eugène Joors (February 20, 1850 – October 23, 1910) was a Belgian painter known for a realistic style. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp from 1865 to 1870, studying with Polydore Beaufaux, Nicaise de Keyser, and Jozef Van Lerius. In 1886 he began teaching still-life painting, together with his friend Frans Mortelmans. One of his students was the German painter Helene Cramer. Joors painted traditional still lifes and floral arrangements, as well as landscapes, portraits, and everyday scenes. From 1879 he regularly exhibited in Antwerp and abroad, and won a gold medal in Munich, where Prince Luitpold bought one of his paintings. He helped Charles Verlat create the famous panorama of the Battle of Waterloo. He received the Order of Leopold, and a street in Borgerhout is named after him. He was born in Borgerhout, Belgium, and died in Berchem, Belgium, at the age of 60.
