Erlin Township, Changhua
Erlin Township (Chinese: 二林鎮; pinyin: Èrlín Zhèn; Minnan: Jī-lîm-tìn or Gī-lîm-tìn) is an urban township in Changhua County, Taiwan. It is the largest township in the county by area, covering about 93 square kilometers. As of January 2023, about 48,379 people live there.
Geography and communities
Erlin is located in central Taiwan. The township includes many villages, such as Fengtian, Donghe, Nanguang, Xiping, Beiping, Zhongxi, Guangxing, Xiangtian, Waizhu, Xinghua, Dongxing, and others. Local sights include Renhe Temple. Erlin Bus Station connects the township to Yuanlin and other towns.
History
During the Dutch era in Formosa, the area was part of the Favorlang region. Erlin’s historic heart is believed to be near Gierim, a center of Sino-aboriginal trade and sometimes associated with piracy and smuggling.
Notable natives
Liu Wen-hsiung, who served in the Legislative Yuan in 1990, and Liao Yung-lai, who was a legislator (1993–1996) and Taichung County magistrate (1997–2001), are from Erlin.
Climate
Erlin has a hot, humid climate with a rainy season. It receives about 1,110 millimeters of precipitation per year, with warm summers and mild winters.
