East Pakistan Students' League
East Pakistan Students’ League (EPSL, Bengali: পূর্ব পাকিস্তান ছাত্রলীগ, Urdu: مشرقی پاکستان سٹوڈنٹس لیگ) was a student political group in East Pakistan. It was founded in 1948 to support the Muslim League’s political activities in elections after Pakistan’s creation. The founder was Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The first meeting to form the group took place on January 4, 1948 at Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall, University of Dhaka, and the organization was formed as the East Pakistan Muslim Students’ League. In 1949 there was a proposal to drop the word “Muslim” from the name, but it was not possible at that time. After the Bengali Language Movement, the 1953 council approved and implemented changing the name to East Pakistan Students’ League, removing “Muslim.”
Key leadership included founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (leader), President Nur-e-Alam Siddique, and Secretary General Shajahan Siraj. The EPSL split from the All India Muslim Students Federation and was preceded by the East Pakistan Muslim Student’s League (1948–1953). Its headquarters were at 42 Balaka Building, Dhaka. The party’s ideology combined socialism with Bengali nationalism, and its colours were green. Its mother party was the East Pakistan Awami League, with national affiliation to the All-Pakistan Awami League.
The EPSL existed until July 21, 1972, after which it was succeeded by the Bangladesh Students’ League and the Bangladesh Chhatra League (Socialist).
