East Church, Inverness
East Church in Inverness, Scotland, is a historic Church of Scotland building and a Category B listed church. It began as a chapel of ease in 1798 and was rebuilt in 1852–53. The street front was added in 1897–98 by Ross & Macbeth. The church left the Church of Scotland during the 1843 Disruption and became Inverness East Free Church, later joining the United Free Church in 1900. In 1929 it returned to the Church of Scotland. The parish covered central Inverness and nearby areas including Longman, Drakies and Raigmore. In the Raigmore estate there is an outreach post called The Shack, used as a drop-in for people in need and as a base for local work.
In 2022 plans were announced to unify the parish with Inshes Church and close East Church, with the final service held on 5 March 2023. The last minister, Rev. A. T. B. McGowan, retired in February 2019. In 2024 the building was bought by Cultarlann Inbhir Nis, a charity working to create a Gaelic cultural centre. The church has a weekly attendance of about 250 and is evangelical in churchmanship.
