Eagle River is a community in the Municipality of Anchorage, Alaska. It sits along the Eagle River, between Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson and Chugach State Park in the Chugach Mountains. The ZIP code is 99577. It started with homesteaders and was annexed to Anchorage in 1975. Today, Eagle River is a suburb of Anchorage, but it also serves as a regional shopping and service hub between Wasilla and the city of Anchorage. Many residents are military families from JBER.

Some residents have at times talked about seceding from Anchorage to become its own city, with discussions continuing at various times, including in 2019. Eagle River has a close connection with its northern neighbor, Chugiak, and the two share history.

Geography and neighborhoods: The Eagle River runs through the southern part of the community. Neighborhoods along the Glenn Highway tend to be level or gently rising toward the Chugach Mountains. Other areas along the canyon near Briggs Bridge sit closer to the river bottom. Wallace Mountain in the northeast hosts several radio transmitters.

Climate: January temperatures average from about 6 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit, while summer highs range from 50 to 70. The area gets about 15.9 inches of rain and 69 inches of snow each year. Most snow falls from October through December. The winter sometimes includes 2 to 3 chinook winds, which warm the air and melt snow. Spring is known locally as “break up” as rivers and lakes thaw. People often plant seedlings after Memorial Day, with care for possible late frost.

Population and economy: The 2000 census counted about 22,236 people in Eagle River and around 8,000 in nearby areas, with roughly 30,000 living in the Eagle River–Chugiak region. The area has grown as a shopping and service center, with more restaurants and medical services added in the last decade. Many residents work in Anchorage or at the nearby military base. A local movie theater opened in 2006 but closed in 2011. Major local industries include services, retail, and government.

Education: Eagle River is served by the Anchorage School District. Schools in the area include Eagle River Elementary, Ravenwood Elementary, Alpenglow Elementary, Homestead Elementary, Firelake Elementary, Chugiak Elementary, and Birchwood Elementary; Gruening Middle School and Mirror Lake Middle School; Eagle River High School and Chugiak High School. Some schools were damaged in the 2018 earthquake and temporarily closed, but most have since reopened. The University of Alaska Anchorage offers classes locally, and there’s a local Bible college. Homeschooling and charter options are available as well.

Community and culture: Annual events include a Fourth of July celebration at Lion’s Park and the Bear Paw Festival in July, which features a Miss Bear Paw pageant, awards, a 5k race, a parade, and performances. The Chugiak-Eagle River Chamber of Commerce runs the Bear Paw Festival and supports scholarships.

Recreation: People enjoy hiking Mount Baldy, rafting, skiing, and various outdoor activities. A bike trail runs along the Glenn Highway, and sidewalks are kept clear in the downtown area during winter. There are cross-country skiing trails near Eagle River High School and around town. Local youth sports groups include the Chugiak Youth Sports Association, the Eagle River Soccer Club, and the Chugiak Soccer Club. The area also has parks, lakes, and outdoor spaces for exploring.

Media: The Chugiak-Eagle River Star is a weekly newspaper serving Eagle River, Chugiak, Eklutna, Peters Creek, and Birchwood.
