Duke of Clarence and Avondale
Duke of Clarence and Avondale was a royal title in the United Kingdom. It was created on 24 May 1890 for Prince Albert Victor, Queen Victoria’s grandson and the eldest son of the Prince of Wales (the future King Edward VII). This was the last royal dukedom to have two place names. Albert Victor died of pneumonia on 14 January 1892 before he could marry, so the title became extinct. He also held the subsidiary title Earl of Athlone. He is buried in the Albert Memorial Chapel beside St George’s Chapel, Windsor, under an Art Nouveau memorial designed by Sir Alfred Gilbert.
