Drury railway station
Drury railway station
Drury railway station is being rebuilt in Auckland, New Zealand. It will reopen in 2026 as part of the Auckland railway electrification project. The station will be on the North Island Main Trunk line, south of Waihoehoe Road, between Flanagan Road and Great South Road, serving the Drury area in south Auckland.
History
- The original Drury station opened on 20 May 1875 as part of the Auckland-to-Drury line with a branch to Onehunga.
- In 1918, the current station building was replaced on a new site, which also replaced nearby Runciman station.
- The station closed on 21 May 1972.
Recent plans and construction
- In 2017, a government plan proposed new stations at Drury West and Paerata to support housing growth.
- As part of the New Zealand Upgrade Programme, funding was provided to electrify the line from Papakura to Pukekohe and to build new stations, including Drury Central and Drury West (with Drury West later renamed as part of the plan to Paerata).
- Planning consent for Drury Central and Paerata was granted in February 2022, with work continuing on Drury West.
- The project includes electrifying the track so electric trains can run to Drury.
Naming and local input
- The new stations were planned with input from local Māori groups, who suggested te reo names.
- In 2022, Drury Central was initially proposed to be named Maketuu, but in August 2022 the New Zealand Geographic Board recommended using the name Drury for the station instead.
- The iwi and the public discussed the names, and in March 2023 the Board approved using the name Drury.
