Dream House 78′ 17″
Dream House 78' 17" is a studio album by minimalist composer La Monte Young, Marian Zazeela, and their group the Theatre of Eternal Music (featuring trumpetist Jon Hassell and trombonist Garrett List). Released in 1974 by the French label Shandar, the album runs 78 minutes and 17 seconds. It was recorded on January 13, 1973, and July 14, 1973.
The album has two long drone pieces. The first, "13 I 73 5:35–6:14:03 PM NYC," uses three sine waves with the performers and is part of a larger work called The Tortoise, His Dreams and Journeys. The second, "Drift Study 14 VII 73 9:27:27–10:06:41 PM NYC (39" 14"), is performed entirely by sine wave generators. La Monte Young set the frequencies and voltages with custom oscillators designed by sound engineer Robert Adler.
The cover and design were created by Marian Zazeela in magenta on black, featuring Young and Zazeela. The inner jacket includes notes by Shandar founder Daniel Caux and extensive writings by Young about the music and its history. The album is noted for its unusually long running time and its emphasis on time and pure tones rather than traditional harmony.
Aguirre Records reissued the album on vinyl in 2016 in a limited edition, and Superior Viaduct reissued it in 2024 on vinyl and CD. All music is composed by La Monte Young, Marian Zazeela, and the Theatre of Eternal Music.
