British Council Nepal
British Council Nepal is the UK's international organization for cultural relations in Nepal. Its head office is in Lazimpat, Kathmandu. It mainly promotes English and runs IELTS exams in Nepal. It began in 1959 with a public library in Kantipath, which has since closed. The council has a budget to operate in Nepal and also runs various social and educational activities. In January 2020, it faced controversy over taxes after a complaint in the Nepal Parliament alleged it had been operating for years without registering or paying taxes.
