Double Eleven (company)
Double Eleven Limited, also known as Double Eleven Studios, is a British video game developer and publisher based in Middlesbrough, England. It was founded on 23 December 2009 by Lee Hutchinson and Matt Shepcar after they left Rockstar Leeds to work on smaller indie games.
The company began in Hutchinson’s loft in Durham and moved to the Boho One office in Middlesbrough in 2010, with Kimberley Turner joining as finance director. Early on, they did exclusive work for Sony, including LittleBigPlanet for PlayStation Vita revealed at E3 2011, and they opened a second studio in Leeds.
Key projects and milestones
- 2011–2012: Contracted work with Sony Computer Entertainment Europe; opened a Leeds studio.
- 2013–2014: Worked on Frozen Synapse Prime (a remake for Vita/PS3), released PixelJunk Shooter Ultimate and Limbo on multiple platforms, and began releasing Goat Simulator on various systems.
- 2014–2015: Released Frozen Synapse Prime on Windows, PS3, and Vita; Goat Simulator and related titles expanded to more platforms.
- 2017: Released Super Cloudbuilt and Songbringer. The company was named one of the Best Places To Work in the UK games industry and appeared in The Sunday Times Tech Track 100 for strong growth.
- 2019: Acquired VooFoo Studios (Hustle Kings and This Is Snooker).
- 2020: Opened a second office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to enter the Asian market.
- 2022: Collaborated with Bethesda Game Studios to develop Fallout 76 content; reached about 300 employees; acquired by Pneuma Group, owned by founder Hutchinson.
- 2023–2024: Led development for Red Dead Redemption ports on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch (with Rockstar Games); Windows version released in 2024. Named lead developer for Prison Architect 2 with Paradox Interactive.
Games
Double Eleven has worked on and published a wide range of titles across many platforms, including late‑stage ports and collaborations. Notable entries include LittleBigPlanet for Vita, PixelJunk Shooter Ultimate, Limbo, Goat Simulator, Prison Architect (ports to multiple platforms), Minecraft Dungeons (in collaboration with Mojang), Rust (published on consoles with Facepunch Studios), and Red Dead Redemption ports for PS4 and Switch.
Size and ownership
As of 2024, Double Eleven has more than 400 employees. In 2022, the company was acquired by Pneuma Group, the investment group run by founder Lee Hutchinson. The company remains based in England, with additional offices in Malaysia and Leeds.
