Donner Ski Ranch is a budget-friendly, family-owned ski area on Donner Summit in the Tahoe National Forest, California. It’s owned by Janet and Marshall Tuttle, who bought the resort after it went bankrupt. The area sits near Sugar Bowl Ski Resort and has lifts on both sides of its summit. It offers 52 runs across 435 acres, with 16 beginner, 20 intermediate, and 16 advanced trails, and a vertical drop of 750 feet. The rustic lodge, built in 1947, is made mostly of wood, and an adjacent building was added in 1951 by John Sloan Woodard, who ran the resort in the early 1950s. Norm Sayler joined in 1953, helped build the first chairlift in 1955, and managed Donner Ski Ranch from 1958 for 46 years, gradually gaining ownership. The lodge was renovated after the current owners took over, and the lifts were repainted at that time.
