Docidava (castra)

Docidava was a Roman fortress (castra) in the province of Dacia, located in present-day Buciumi, Romania. It was built in the 2nd century AD during Emperor Trajan’s reign and abandoned in the 3rd century AD. The fort was part of the Dacia Porolissensis frontier and helped guard a mountain road through the Rag Pass in the Meseș Mountains. A stone wall blocked the pass and directed traffic to a guarded entrance, with a road from the fort of Bologa toward the northwest area of the Limes Porolissensis. The fortress covered about 2.2 hectares (134 by 167 meters); there was also a wood-and-earth version about 2.0 hectares (125 by 160 meters). Docidava was supported by two small fortlets and about 23 towers, forming a defensive network.

Remains of the nearby settlement (vicus) have been found. The site sits at coordinates 47°02′54″N 23°02′41″E, at an altitude of about 373 meters.

In 2024, Docidava was inscribed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Frontiers of the Roman Empire – Dacia.” It is also recognized as a National Historical Monument, with exhibits at the County Museum of History and Art in Zalău.
