Dixie Pipeline
Dixie Pipeline is a 1,307-mile propane pipeline that runs from Gulf of Mexico refineries to delivery points in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. The line is 6 to 12 inches in diameter and includes a 204-mile branch into southern Georgia. It is owned by Enterprise Products Partners.
Incidents:
- November 1, 2007, near Carmichael, Mississippi: A 12-inch section ruptured while carrying propane at about 1,405 psi, releasing about 430,626 gallons (10,253 barrels). The propane ignited, creating a large fireball. Two people were killed, seven were injured, four houses were destroyed, and several others were damaged. Suspected cause: electric resistance welding pipe failure.
- July 5, 2010, in McDuffie County, Georgia: A landowner struck the pipeline with a bulldozer, rupturing it. Propane escaped and ignited 16 minutes later, killing one person, injuring another, and destroying a mobile home.
