Dinner under the Helsinki sky
Dinner under the Helsinki sky (Finnish: Illallinen Helsingin taivaan alla; Swedish: Middag under Helsingfors himmel) is an event where people have a picnic dinner outside in public urban spaces like yards, parks, sidewalks or squares. The first dinner happened on Helsinki Day, 12 June 2013. It took place on Pohjoisesplanadi street, which was closed to traffic, with tables for 1000 people covered in white cloths and everyone bringing their own dinner. The event was free, but 700 places were booked within two minutes on the event page, and the remaining spots could be picked up from Helsinki City Hall.
Inspired by Helsinki Day, the dinner was held again on 8 August 2013. This time residents could organize dinners wherever they wanted—in inner courtyards, nearby parks or on sidewalks in front of their homes. Participants had to mark their dinner on a map on the event page and cover tables with white cloths. Dinners were held in places such as a main park, a beach and the Teurastamo courtyard. The event was organized with Helsingin Energia and Helsinki city’s Department of Public Works. Similar events exist around the world, such as Dîner en Blanc, which has run since 1988.
Dinner under the Helsinki sky is unofficial and informal, open to all residents. It has been held every year since, as shown on the Helsinki Day page up to 2024. Both events were created by Yhteismaa ry – Commonland, an organization whose other projects include The Cleaning Day, Parking Day and Nifty Neighbor – A Place to Care.
