Gamerang
Gamerang was an online video game rental service based in Santa Ana, California. It launched on September 30, 2003, founded by Greg Gentling (CEO) and Nargess Fassih (COO). The service offered games for many platforms, including PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo systems, PSP, Game Boy Advance, and more.
How it worked: members paid a monthly fee and had games mailed to them using prepaid return mailers. They could keep games as long as their account stayed active and return them anytime. When a returned game arrived at the distribution center, the next game on the member’s prioritized “Game Queue” was sent. Members could also buy rented titles or purchase new and used games directly from the site.
Gamerang claimed a library of more than 9,000 titles and ran four distribution centers across California, Oklahoma, Minnesota, and New Jersey. In 2010, the company relaunched its site to improve accessibility and added social media features and mobile support.
As of June 2019, Gamerang was no longer in business according to the Better Business Bureau, and its site showed archived posts about video games. Some sources praised the service as an easy, affordable way to try many games.
