Dick o the Cow is an old border ballad. It follows Dick, whose three cows are stolen by John Armstrang and his companion Billie, who think he’s a simpleton. Dick asks his lord for permission to seek revenge in Liddesdaile. The raiders taunt him, and he steals two horses. John chases him on horseback; they fight, and Dick wins, now with three horses. He sells one horse for money and buys a good milk cow. With his lord’s permission, he moves away to avoid the Armstrongs.
