Devin the Dude
Devin the Dude, born Devin Copeland on June 4, 1969, is a Houston rapper who helped shape Southern hip hop and is often called a pioneer of stoner rap. He grew up bouncing between Florida and Texas and found marijuana to be a big influence on his music. As a teen, he was into breakdancing and started rapping with friends.
His first group was 3D, then he formed the Odd Squad with his brother and a friend. The Odd Squad released Fadanuf Fa Erybody!! in 1994 on Rap-A-Lot Records, which earned praise in Houston’s rap scene. Afterward, Copeland joined Scarface’s Facemob before going solo in 1998 at Scarface’s encouragement.
Devin the Dude released several solo albums on Rap-A-Lot: The Dude (1998), Just Tryin’ ta Live (2002), To tha X-Treme (2004), and Waitin’ to Inhale (2007). He also contributed to many other songs, including Dr. Dre’s “Fuck You” and De La Soul’s “Baby Phat.” He appeared in the 2007 documentary Screwed In Houston.
His later albums include Landing Gear (2008) on Razor & Tie, Suite 420 (2010), Gotta Be Me (2010), One for the Road (2013) through his Coughee Brothaz Music imprint, Acoustic Levitation (2017), Still Rollin’ Up: Somethin’ to Ride With (2019), and Soulful Distance (2021). He acted in the 2012 stoner comedy Highway, whose soundtrack featured multiple artists.
In 2024–2025, Devin co-created Coughee by Devin the Dude, a hemp and cannabis culture brand. The brand grew from a slang term his group used for marijuana. Despite never becoming a mainstream star, he’s known for his relaxed, conversational style and cannabis-themed storytelling, with songs like “Doobie Ashtray.” Critics have praised him as a notably quirky, spaced-out voice in rap. As of 2025, he continues to tour regularly.
