Minister for Aged Care and Seniors
Minister for Aged Care and Seniors is an Australian Government role that oversees aged care policy and services, working with the Minister for Health and Aged Care. The current minister is Sam Rae (Labor), who has held the job since 13 May 2025. The minister is appointed by the Governor-General on the prime minister’s advice and is part of the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing.
Peter Morris was the first holder in 1988 (originally titled Minister for Housing and Aged Care). Since then the position has changed several times. A mental health component was added in 2010, but in 2013 ageing moved to the social services portfolio while mental health stayed with health.
In October 2015, the Turnbull government moved the aged care portfolio back to the Department of Health. The role has often been an outer ministry (not a Cabinet minister), but it was briefly a Cabinet position from January to May 2025 under the first Albanese ministry, before returning to outer ministry in May 2025 with the second Albanese ministry.
Assistant Ministers of Health and Aged Care have supported the role.
