Deputed Testamony Stakes
The Deputed Testamony Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race for Maryland-bred three-year-olds. It takes place in February at Laurel Park Racecourse in Laurel, Maryland, on dirt over a distance of 1 1/16 miles (8.5 furlongs) on a left-handed track. The race is ungraded and has a $100,000 purse. Weight is assigned, and entry is limited to registered Maryland-bred three-year-olds.
The Deputed Testamony Stakes is a Maryland Triple Crown prep race; winners often move on to the Private Terms Stakes at Laurel in March, though some have gone to races in New York or Kentucky.
The race was named in honor of Deputed Testamony, the 1983 Preakness Stakes winner and a top Maryland-bred champion three-year-old colt. Deputed Testamony was bred and owned by trainer J. William Boniface at Bonita Farm. He won the City of Baltimore Handicap at Preakness Day in 1984, setting a track record for 1 1/16 miles (1:40.40). He retired to stud at Bonita Farm, produced 20 starts with 11 wins and earnings of $674,324, and became one of Maryland’s leading sires. He was pensioned after the 2004 season and died in 2012 at age 32.
