David Matravers (26 September 1937 – 31 May 2022) was a British mathematician and cosmologist. He was a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Portsmouth and worked in applied mathematics and theoretical cosmology. He founded the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation at Portsmouth. He studied in South Africa, earning a BSc and MSc from Natal College and UNISA, and a PhD from Rhodes University in 1972 under Hanno Rund. In 1990 he became Head of the School of Mathematical Studies at Portsmouth, and in 1997 he was Head of the School of Computer Science and Mathematics. He started a research group in General Relativity and Cosmology at Portsmouth, which became the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation in 2002. Matravers published more than 50 papers in general relativity and cosmology. In 2019 he co-authored How Cosmologists Explain the Universe to Friends and Family with Karim A. Malik.
