David Effron is an American conductor and educator. He earned a Bachelor of Music in piano from the University of Michigan and a Master of Music in piano from Indiana University. He worked as an assistant to Wolfgang Sawallisch at the Cologne Opera, then spent 18 years on the conducting staff of the New York City Opera. He led the Merola Program in San Francisco and was artistic director of the Central City Opera in Colorado. He taught at the Curtis Institute from 1970 to 1977 and led the orchestra program at the Eastman School of Music from 1977 to 1998. He was music director and conductor of the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra from 1987 to 1996. Since 1998 he has been a Professor of Music at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. He directed the Brevard Music Center’s summer program from 1997 to 2007. He has conducted orchestras in Europe, Asia, Israel, and across North America. His recording of Copland’s A Lincoln Portrait with William Warfield and the Eastman Philharmonia won the 1983 Grammy for Best Spoken Word Recording. He has received a Fulbright scholarship and a Rockefeller Foundation Grant.
