David & the Citizens
David & the Citizens: A Simple History
David & the Citizens is a Swedish rock band from Skåne, formed in 1999 by singer and songwriter David Fridlund. Fridlund moved from Stockholm to Malmö, where he teamed up with Mikael Carlsson, Jenny Wilson, and Karl-Jonas Winqvist. They played early shows at the Blind Donkey and performed at major Swedish festivals like Hultsfred and Emmaboda. Some original members left to focus on other projects, and new members Alexander Madsen, Conny Fridh, and Magnus Bjerkert joined, creating a refreshed lineup.
Music and career
- The band released its first record, a self-titled EP, in 2001. That same year they returned to the studio for more music and performed at festivals.
- In 2002 they released their debut album, For All Happy Endings.
- The follow-up album, Until the Sadness is Gone, came out in 2003, with the 2004 EP Big Chill featuring Mattias Alkberg.
- Until the Sadness is Gone was nominated for a Swedish Grammy Award in 2003/2004.
- In 2006, a mini-album called Are You In My Blood was released on Bad Taste Records, marking the band’s first release with a label other than Adrian Recordings. That year they also issued a DVD, Let’s Not Fall Apart 1999-2005, documenting the band’s development (even though two members had left by then).
- On December 17, 2007, they released the EP I Saw My Reflection And I Didn’t Recognize Myself, with four new songs. The band stated they would continue, even with changes.
Hiatus and later activity
- On August 10, 2008, David Fridlund announced the band was taking a break and that he would continue performing under his own name for a while.
- In 2019, Fridlund began performing and recording under the name Citizens Band Orchestra.
- In 2021, Hyllie Bryggeri released Floating Upstream - American Pale Ale, a beer named after the band’s song, and David held an art exhibit to celebrate the event.
- In August 2022, the band reformed for a one-off reunion at the Malmö Festival, bringing back the original lineup that had earned a Grammy nomination.
