Darren Stewart (soccer)
Darren Stewart (17 May 1966 – 18 October 2018) was an Australian soccer player and coach. He was born in Newcastle, Australia, and played as a defender.
During his career he played in Australia, Malaysia and Singapore. He appeared for Newcastle Rosebud, APIA Leichhardt and Newcastle Breakers in Australia, captained Johor FA in Malaysia where he won the Malaysia FA Cup in 1998, and later played for Balestier Central in Singapore. He earned three caps for the Australian national team in 1992 and retired from playing in 2002.
After retiring, Stewart became a coach. He worked with youth teams in Singapore and went on to manage several clubs, including Gombak United, Balestier Khalsa and Woodlands Wellington. He was the head coach of the Maldives national team from 2016 to 2018, and lived in Singapore.
Stewart died in Singapore on 18 October 2018, aged 52. In 2020, the Darren Stewart Cup was created to honor the teams he represented.
