Dōshi
Dōshi is a village in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. It sits in the far southeast of the prefecture, in the Tanzawa Mountains, and is mostly covered by forests with many campsites.
As of June 1, 2019, about 1,676 people lived there in 623 households. The village covers 79.57 square kilometers, giving a low population density of about 21 people per square kilometer.
Climate-wise, Dōshi has hot, humid summers and relatively mild winters. The average yearly temperature is 11.8°C. It rains a lot, with about 1,677 mm of rainfall per year, and September is the rainiest month. Average highs are about 25.9°C in August, and average lows are about 2.0°C in January.
The population has been declining for several decades. Historically, during the Edo period Kai Province was under direct shogunate control. Dōshi village was established in 1889. Starting in 1897, the Dōshigawa River became a key water source for Yokohama. In 1916, much of the land was set aside as a protected watershed. In 2003, residents asked to merge with Yokohama, but the plan was rejected because it would cross prefectural borders and create an exclave.
The economy is mainly forestry and agriculture. There is one public elementary school and one public junior high school in the village; there is no high school.
