CrossIron Mills
CrossIron Mills is a large, covered shopping centre just north of Calgary, Alberta, in Rocky View County near the hamlet of Balzac. Developed by Ivanhoé Cambridge, it opened in August 2009 and is the largest single‑level mall in Alberta, with about 109,440 square metres (1,178,000 square feet) of retail and entertainment space.
The first Alberta Bass Pro Shops opened in spring 2009, and most of the mall followed on August 19, 2009. A final phase called The Entertainment Neighbourhood opened in 2010 and was later reconfigured into a new Food Hall in the mid‑2010s, with the old food court turned into additional retail space. The project is inspired by the Mills Corporation’s design, but it was not developed by them.
CrossIron Mills sits near the QEII Highway and Highway 566, just outside Calgary’s city limits. Access is via Exits 273 (CrossIron Drive) and 275 (Highway 566), with additional routes through Dwight McLellan Trail and the Métis Trail extensions completed in 2009 and 2011. In 2015 planning for a major expansion began; the first phase in 2016 added a 1,400‑seat food court with 24 restaurants and 4,272 square metres of new retail space. The expansion also saw new stores like Victoria’s Secret, Shoppers Drug Mart, and Milestones, plus a renovated Sport Chek. The old food court became stores including Skechers, Polo Ralph Lauren Factory Store, Aritzia, Aerie, and Sephora. The mall uses a single‑level “race track” layout with many big anchors and entertainment options, and it drew about 250,000 visitors in the first five days of opening.
