Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms – Short Version

Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms is a 2023 Chinese epic fantasy film directed by Wuershan. It is the first movie in the Creation of the Gods trilogy and is based on the Ming dynasty novel Investiture of the Gods by Xu Zhonglin. The story is set in a mythic version of ancient China, during the final days of the Shang dynasty, and follows a mix of heroes, immortals, and demons.

The film centers on a tyrant king named Shou who rises to power in Shang and triggers a brutal struggle for control of the realm. Jiang Ziya, a monk and student of the celestial Yuanshi Tianzun, is drawn into the danger and, along with his nephew-disciples Nezha and Yang Jian, seeks to obtain a powerful Investiture Scroll that could restore order to the world. They are opposed by Shen Gongbao and other forces, while a demon-fox spirit possessing Shou’s beloved consort Daji intensifies the palace intrigue. The story blends royal politics, magical battles, and quests to determine who should wield great power.

Production of the film was extensive and international in spirit, with a large cast and heavy use of visual effects. Principal photography took place in Qingdao, China, and the film features thousands of effects-driven shots. The music was composed by Gordy Haab. Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms opened in China on July 20, 2023, and was later released in the United States and other markets. It became a box-office success in China and drew mixed to positive reviews for its spectacular visuals and ambitious scope.

The movie is followed by Creation of the Gods II: Demon Force, released January 29, 2025, which continues the tale of Xiqi’s defense against Shang’s attack. The final chapter, Creation Under Heaven, will depict Xiqi’s counterattack and the establishment of the Zhou dynasty. The film is recognized as one of the most ambitious and costly Chinese productions to date.
