County Route 111 (Suffolk County, New York)

CR 111 is a short north–south road in Suffolk County that connects central Long Island with the Hamptons. It runs about 4.77 miles from NY 27 in Eastport to I-495 in Manorville. The road is known as Captain Daniel Roe Highway, and in Manorville it’s called Eastport Manor Road. It’s also shown on some maps as Port Jefferson–Westhampton Road, reflecting the original idea to connect Port Jefferson with Westhampton Beach.

Route description
CR 111 begins at an incomplete interchange with NY 27 near Eastport and travels northwest as a four-lane expressway with a grassy median at 55 mph. It has a partial interchange with CR 51 (East Moriches–Riverhead Road). After crossing a dirt road named Toppings Path, the highway passes through mostly rural and then slightly more residential areas. A southbound right-in/right-out from Gordon Street leads to Eastport–Manor Road. The route then meets the northern end of Eastport Manor Road at a signalized intersection; beyond this, CR 111 becomes a surface road with a 45 mph limit, following the original Eastport–Manor Road alignment. It passes through a commercial area with two shopping centers and then reaches I-495 at exit 70, a diamond interchange. CR 111 ends at a signal with I-495 westbound. Eastport Manor Road continues briefly as a two-lane road beyond CR 111’s end.

History
The route was planned in the 1960s to link the northern and southern shores, but only a short section from Eastport to Manorville was built. Budget cuts and environmental concerns about building through the Pine Barrens halted the broader project. CR 111 as it exists opened in early 1975.

Unbuilt plans
Originally, CR 111 would have been a 21-mile highway from Port Jefferson Station to Westhampton Beach, with numerous interchanges. Much of the planned right-of-way would have passed through areas now protected as nature preserves, and parts became the Paumanok Path.
