Clara Place
Clara Place is a garden square in Topsham, Devon. Built in 1841 on the site of the old workhouse by William Clapp and named after his wife Clara, it forms a three-sided courtyard of three blocks, each with three houses. The fourth side faces the road, with central steps and iron railings dating from 1841. Each block has a central pediment, and the middle block is taller at three storeys. Clara Place is one of Topsham’s few surviving Victorian buildings and is Grade II* listed, as are the railings. Nikolaus Pevsner described it as “a neat building … for the accommodation of decent folks.”
