Charlton Tandy
Charlton 'Charles' Hunt Tandy (c. 1836–1919) was an African American lawyer, newspaper publisher, volunteer militia officer, state legislator-elect, public official, and civil rights activist in Missouri. Born in Lexington, Kentucky, around 1836, he was named after the city's first mayor, Charlton Hunt. In St. Louis, he worked to desegregate streetcars, organizing a boycott when court orders did not stop discrimination. He started a group to help Exodusters and helped establish Lincoln University. He led protests about where Sumner High School was built, saying black students deserved clean, quiet schools like white students. He was a Republican. The State Historical Society of Missouri has a collection of his papers. In St. Louis, the Tandy Recreation Center and Tandy Park are named after him.
