Chanute High School
Chanute High School is a public high school in Chanute, Kansas. It is part of Chanute USD 413. The current building opened in 2008 and includes a new trades wing for welding and construction. The school serves grades 9–12 with about 558 students (2023–2024) and around 34 full-time teachers. The campus is in a rural area. School colors are Columbia blue and gold, and the mascot is the Blue Comets. The principal is Zack Murry.
Academics: Students can take concurrent courses with Neosho County Community College. AP courses include Calculus AB, European History, English Language, and English Literature. Spanish I–IV is offered. Welding and construction are available in the trades program.
Activities: Clubs and groups include Blue Comet Bands, Chess Club, Debate, Forensics, Drama, Dungeons & Dragons, FCCLA, Future Business Leaders of America, HOSA, History Club, National Honor Society, SkillsUSA, Student Government, Model United Nations, Leadership, Upward Bound, and a Gay/Straight Alliance started in 2012.
Athletics: The Chanute Blue Comets compete in KSHSAA Class 4A in the Southeast Kansas League. Sports include baseball; boys’ and girls’ basketball; cross country; football; boys’ and girls’ soccer; softball; boys’ and girls’ tennis; track; volleyball; boys’ and girls’ golf; wrestling; and unified bowling. Rival: Pittsburg High School. The school newspaper is The Comet.
