Central Slovenia Statistical Region
The Central Slovenia Statistical Region is located in central Slovenia. It covers 2,555 square kilometers and is the country’s most densely populated region, with Ljubljana, the capital, at its center.
In 2020, about 570,773 people lived there, and the region has the highest share of residents with post-secondary education.
The region includes 25 municipalities, with Ljubljana as the largest city. The Litija municipality left in 2015 to join the Central Sava Statistical Region.
Economically, it is the most developed region in Slovenia. In 2019 the regional GDP was around 18 billion euros, with a GDP per capita of about 32,600 euros.
Employment is mainly in services (about 70%), followed by industry (about 28%), with agriculture around 2%.
The region attracts a significant portion of Slovenia’s tourists, especially those visiting Ljubljana.
Its Human Development Index (2022) was 0.970, classified as very high and ranked first in the country.
