Centenary Group
Centenary Group is a privately owned Ugandan conglomerate that operates in financial services, information technology, and social programs. Its main company is Centenary Bank, the second-largest bank in Uganda by assets.
As of December 31, 2021, Centenary Bank had assets of about UGX 4.8 trillion (roughly US$1.36 billion). By October 2023, the group’s assets were about UGX 6.2 trillion (about US$1.63 billion), with shareholders’ equity over UGX 789.5 billion (around US$223 million). It is the largest indigenous Ugandan financial services group.
In December 2023, Centenary Group began building a Tier 3 green data center in Masaka, the first of its kind outside Kampala.
History in brief:
- 1983: Started as Centenary Rural Development Trust (CRDT).
- 1985: Centenary Bank began serving customers.
- 1993: Bank of Uganda granted CRDT a commercial banking license, becoming Centenary Bank.
- March 2019: Centenary Bank’s board approved forming a group structure; with BoU consent, Centenary Group was established on 25 October 2019.
- 6 November 2019: The group formed a banking subsidiary, Centenary Rural Development Bank Limited (CRDBL).
- 16 March 2020: BoU licensed CRDBL, effective 1 July 2020. The banking business was transferred to CRDBL on that date.
As of May 2023, Centenary Group included:
- Centenary Bank Uganda Limited, a large commercial bank in Uganda
- Centenary Technology Services Limited (Cente-Tech), the group’s ICT arm, developing a Level 3 data center in Masaka
- Centenary Foundation, a non-profit promoting the group’s social programs
- Centenary Bank Malawi, a commercial bank in Malawi, majority owned by Centenary Group (with a minority stake held by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Lilongwe)
