Celestial Pictures
Celestial Pictures Limited is an entertainment company based in Hong Kong that focuses on Asian-language films and content. Founded in 2000, it is owned by Astro Overseas Limited and operates a joint venture, Celestial Tiger Entertainment. The company runs TV channels including Celestial Movies, Celestial Classic Movies, and WATA. Its site is www.celestialpictures.com.
Celestial owns the Shaw Brothers Film Library, one of the world’s largest collections of Chinese films, with more than 760 titles such as The Five Venoms, Hex, The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, One-Armed Swordsman, King Boxer, and The Flying Guillotine. These films have been digitally restored for global distribution. Celestial bought the Shaw Brothers library in 2000 when it was East Asia Filmed Entertainment Ltd, owned by Astro Holdings Sdn Bhd, which was controlled by Usaha Tegas Sdn Bhd.
In 2001 the company produced two films under the Chinese name 星藝映畫: Comic King and Stowaway, and it adopted the current Chinese name 天映娛樂 in 2002. Shaw Brothers films distributed by Celestial are shown in the United States on the El Rey Network as part of a special programming block.
