Carl Offterdinger
Carl Offterdinger (1829–1889) was a German painter and illustrator from Stuttgart. He studied with Heinrich von Rustige. In the late 1800s he drew many pictures for children's books, fairy tales, and adventure stories. He is best known for fairy-tale scenes and for illustrating works like Hoffmann's The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, Till Eulenspiegel, Robinson Crusoe, Grimm's Fairy Tales, the Leatherstocking Tales, and Gulliver's Travels. In 1874 he illustrated the first edition of Theodor Storm's Pole Poppenspäler in the journal German Youth. He and Heinrich Leutemann also created Mein erstes Märchenbuch (My First Fairy Tale Book) at the end of the 19th century. Some of his illustrations are now in the Boston Harbor Museum.
