Fredi Marcarini
Fredi Marcarini (1959–2020) was an Italian photographer from Milan known for dramatic portrait photography. His interest in photography began very early: at age 4 he pretended to shoot with a non-existent camera and his father's tripod, and at age 6 he received a real 6x6 camera. By 15 he was developing his own film. He did many jobs while learning photography, including working in a photo studio and serving as a crime scene photographer in the police during his military service. He taught himself by experimentation and built a portfolio, selling images to magazines and advertising agencies before getting commissions. After spending the 1980s as a food photographer, he switched to portraiture, which became his true passion. In the early 2000s he also did reportage work, traveling to Africa, South America, the Arctic and the Caribbean. In 2009 he met painter Jack Vettriano and they collaborated on several projects. Marcarini photographed many Italian and international personalities and celebrities, such as Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan, Philippe Starck, Sir Richard Branson, Jack Vettriano and Tracy Chevalier.
