Caracas Chronicles
Caracas Chronicles is an English-language group blog that covers Venezuelan news, politics, and economics, with a focus on the Chávez era and what happened after. It has described itself as "opposition-leaning-but-not-insane" and is known for criticizing Venezuela’s socialist government while also scrutinizing the opposition.
Founded in 2002 by Francisco “Quico” Toro, it relaunched in 2015 as a Florida-registered LLC. The site says it now has a newsroom in Caracas, correspondents across Venezuela, and plans to become a more professional news site based on strict journalistic standards.
In February 2019, Rafael Osío Cabrices became editor-in-chief. He previously worked at El Nacional and the Primicia magazine and has published three books. Before Cabrices, Toro and economist Juan Nagel alternated as editors.
The Associated Press noted that its English-language content is essential reading for foreign journalists, scholars, and political observers. After Chávez’s death, observers said Caracas Chronicles would remain an important tool for analyzing the Chávez era. David Frum of The Daily Beast once suggested that Chavismo was unsustainable and that Caracas Chronicles would be a key guide when oil prices fell.
