James Bellamy (British academic)

James Bellamy (1819–1909) was a British scholar and administrator at the University of Oxford. He studied at Merchant Taylors’ School, Northwood, and at St John’s College, Oxford, where he earned a BA in 1841 and an MA in 1845. He was ordained in 1843 and later earned a Bachelor of Divinity in 1850 and a Doctor of Divinity in 1872. Bellamy served as President of St John’s College from 1871 to 1909. At Oxford University, he was a member of the University Commission (1877–1879) and served as Vice-Chancellor (1886–1890). He was known as a conservative and a musician.
